    mpeg 2 playback

it works in versions after d46.
but you need to purchase the qt mpeg2 decoder from apple.

    mpeg2 playback is not recommended.
anything that uses interframe compression will slow things down.

current implementation takes a few seconds to load an mpeg movie, as it has to check all the i frames when the movie is loaded - to get frame positions in the movie.
this holds everything else up until done.

if you are going to have to use mpeg2 files, preload them well before you need them

It takes forever to even load one in quicktime.

i think its because they have to scan through all the frames to find the frame boundaries.
it might be possible to cache this information -

but mpeg2 is not really a usable format for most things anyway.

I think there have been improvments since the advent of the HDV implementation and the newer codecs Apple developed last year. I'll do some tests with my HDV camera and reimport the footage using the new FCP HDV import.
