A report from one very good apple service guy here in Sweden:

The design and construction of the fans in G5 are very sensitive for not having the right amount of air streaming thru it (you know when the fans go nut´s and the only way to fix that is pushing that little knob close to the memory slots for a 0,3 sec to make the fans running normal again).

This will make a big wall of things in the way,and maybe course the fans to go at higher speed all the time because of the cased Catalyst.More fan noise, but is that not an issue, maybe this is great.

My recommendation would be that people do not even consider using these things,
