You probably need to have both - if you are working with closely with the client trying to make a specific effect.

Something are much quicker in one or the other.
They both have different strengths.

I started out using AFX, but bought Combustion recently because its just so much quicker to do organic type particles and fx.
But AFX is a workhouse for producing reliable and effective imagery - you just have to put more hard work into it.
