I was just wondering if I ordered a brand new mac mini from apple did they do something that would inhibit me from installing ML on it....

probably not... All existing MacMinis run ML and there hasn't been a hardware change. My local Apple store still ships with ML not Mavericks

- I doubt any store will open up all their existing stock, unwrap them and update from ML to Mavericks!!...

Where are you based? - We have ML disk images. Too big to email though...
