For reference - Shutter open/close and Lamp ON/OFF is possible via RS232 (admittedly not direct HTP) and is can be quicker than HTP - although you would need a serial server / RS232 cable rather than just a cat5 cable
sample Panasonic serial commands (I wrote) are included in catalyst serial control menu.

We've successfully used this in parallel with your serial commands due to J Lyle's love of backups for everything

FYI you can also open a TCP socket on port 1024 on most Panasonic projectors and issue the serial command direct, you just need to make sure you set the password to nothing otherwise it requires complex hashed authentication stuff.
