question... Does Catalyst utilize CUDA at all?

Cuda is a computational engine. With any media server, you are not actually rendering shaders and so a GPU is not necessary. Conversely, a media server is more like a video game where you want a GFX card that drives pixels as opposed to render shaders. Therefore a graphics card that drives large numbers of pixels is better than one that has lots of GPU cores.
