No you patch a single unique DMX channel to control the volume of your layer.
Add volume control the same way you would add a layer.

When playing back, make sure you use one of the "Audio" playback modes on your Layer.

what do i patch into my console? should i just use say a generic dimmer channel or something along that line?

Yes a Generic Desk Channel will do.....if you are on H3 console there are profiles for the volume as well in the Catalyst manufacturer folder.
