LCD or DLP projector?

Which is best for animation style projections (codec photojpeg or aic)?

DLP is better for motion and video type stuff and LCD is better for powerpoint presentations/straight computer graphics.. Just my opinion.

Ryan is right about DLP. However, if you're doing animation and artistic projection then you don't necessarily need to worry about resolution so power vs resolution might be a better choice. Not knowing the exact nature of your content, I can't be sure though.

Mostly animated in loads of fcp layers imported from photoshop (squares, text, rectangles, leaves,... ). Sometimes there was smoke or water movies in the montage but always toghether with the animated stuff.

The show already played using lcd projectors which gave an acceptable result. But we're preparing a new tour and have the choice.

There will be 2 setups where on the 1st we shine on the set and the second where we will be using front projection cloth.

Honestly, if you're doing a tour, follow the simplest rule of thumb. Make things as simple and reliable as possible. Sometimes that means the projector with the most reliable track record, other times it means the one with the smallest truck footprint.

If it comes to resolution, most LCDs are 1024x768. Most DLPs are 1280x1024 or higher. If your content resolution is below the output size then neither matters. If it's soft watery smoke fx then DLP will look smoother. LCD is good for the hard edge stuff.

Also, the typical black level and contrast ratio of an LCD are typically lower than DLP.
