Thread: Maximum Quicktime File size

    Maximum Quicktime File size

    I'll be using PRO V4.0 and 2 DL1s.

We have someone creating some Quicktime movies for the show.
Max length of any given one will be about 4 minutes.

What are my limitations for the file size of the Movie?

My initial guess would be the drive free space, but I don't want to run into a Catalyst limitation.

there is no " size " limitation .

What kind of Computer do you have and what kind of Hard Disk ?

if someone else doing the files for you, you should keep in mind this :

having a bigger resolution of the video projector it's useless unless you want to zoom in the movie.

Dl1 should be 1024x768 . So if you want to use the entire resolution make the movies 1024x768 .

NOTE you can't play 16 1024x768 Movies on 16 layers it all depends on your catalyst system .

in Term of space it depend on the codec you are using. The developer suggest the use of the follow ( BUT IT ALL DEPEND ON YOUR SYSTEM )

Photojpeg 100% down to 50% ( 100% good quality but you can play less movies at the same time , 50% worst quality but little bit of more layers )

Or you can use the Apple Intermediate CODEC but again it all depend on what you want to do.

It could be easier if you come back with the system profile of your Catalyst computer

This is a rental, so I only know the basics.

It is a G5 and the content is dedicated to a SCSI drive, while the software resides on another drive.

Also, I only plan on playing one movie at a time.

The max length of any movie we make will be less than say 5 or 6 minutes.

I have access to the unit ahead of time, so I plan on having our video creator make me a sample movie at 1024x768 to test with.

4 to 6 movies at the same time should be allright .

there are 1000 options about the codecs

Ask the video creator to make you 1024x768 25 frame per second using photo jpeg 85% .

I promise the quality will be allright. and performances too .

don't worry at all about file size in term of space . you have gigas

    Actually Emiliano,

If he's going to be using a G5 instead of a Mac Pro then he should probably use Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) instead of photoJPG. with Rental gear, this can be an issue.

Use 1024x768 if you need the resolution but we've all done just fine using PAL or NTSC and using the DV codec to render quicktime is the thinnest of all.

Not knowing which SCSI disk you will have in your Catalyst, this is the best solution.

If quality is important then use photoJPG but I would never run more than 4 layers at the same time this way. Also like Emiliano says, keep it below 75%. Even 50% would be fine.

Thanks guys. From what you have provided I believe we are comfortably within the capabilities of the system.

I look forward to playing with Catalyst again.

g5 rental with scsi drive - really need to check out what they can do-

there is a lot of performance variation in this-

You will probably also have to install the AIC codec from somewhere.
    Use AIC codec -

6 movies on g5 with scsi is not going to happen.

photojpeg 85% not good either for playback - fine for content creation on PC. convert to AIC on mac.

hang on, AIC it's not pre installed that's why I didn't suggest it.

    am I correct ?

You are correct....in order to be able to use AIC you need to have something like iMove HD (included in iLife 08) to have that codec.
