Can you confirm the operation with catalyst?

    never used one-

    dont have one-

third party testing showed no improvements over other mid-spec cards like x1900 and nvidia 8800

the card should work - nvidia hasnt shown any recent bugs which affect operation

x1900 is the best so far in mac pro jan 2008.

    suggest x1900 over nvidia 8800.

    From Apple Insider:

GeForce 8800 GT available for early Mac Pro

Apple on Tuesday gave users an anticipated upgrade through a new NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT upgrade card for first-generation Mac Pro systems.

The $279 add-in fulfills a promise made in January after some owners of pre-2008 Mac Pro systems complained that the originally released upgrade card is only compatible with systems from its own generation, owing to chipsets programmed only to support the 64-bit EFI firmware on the newer towers.

While Apple has never publicly commented on the delay, one report earlier this month has suggested company chief Steve Jobs' personal awareness of the issue and the company taking on its own production of a backwards-compatible version.

On my 1st gen 8-core Catalyst, I have an x1900.
On my 2nd gen 8-core Catalyst, I have an 8800.

I have another 1st gen with a Quatro FX 5500.

I haven't tried the 5600 yet but the cost is the prohibitive factor.
The machine with the 5500 is driving two 30" cinema displays at 2560x1600 which I use for content creation.

Trust me, the big displays and for creating content are the only reason I have a 5500. It will however drive two Matrox TH2G at 3840x768 each.

The 8800 will also drive TH2G at 3840x768 also. The x1900 will only drive one at that rate. This is unless i drop down to 2400x600 on each TH2G for the x1900.

Incidentally this is on both 1st and 2nd gen machines.

I know Richard you say the x1900 but I am finding the 8800 now is my preference on 2nd Gen.

Whatever you do, don't touch the HD 2600.

    its not quite so straightforward.

just tested my 8800 it sucks for hdsdi input. the 2600 is actually better. 10.5.2.

OH WOW! That's a decision maker. HD video inputs are critical enough where I would go get a 2600. Damn! I'm actually a little shocked.

What about the x1900 and HD-SDI? How does that work with the new capture card?

It's almost sounding like the expensive ass 5600 might be worth testing now
