Yes i have a show where the background movie is running during the whole show.

you could try play audio modes - they might work.

This kept all the movie clips contained to two layers to leave resources open for other things.
Getting the timing right was a little tricky, but not all that hard really. Just a few tweaks here and there.
It all worked very well in the end.
