There are some confusing settings in the apple intermediate codec export settings.
ALWAYS use 'other' - bottom of export settings.
dont use HDV 1080p/i settings
These dont work well at all, and are there to fake up the hdv scaling from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080.

I can vouch for the importance of these settings - I exported some files from Final Cut Pro inadvertently with one of the HD presets selected and the results were bizzare.
The material in the video file was shrunk to a small size and appeared in the top left corner of the image, the rest of the frame was filled with a random colour. I traced the trouble to the AIC export settings, but thought I'd mention it here in case anyone else is troubleshooting weird shrinking movies, or unwanted psychadelic colours...
