This may be a bit off-topic, but I'd like to know if there exists a good utility/app that will allow for remote shutdown/powerup via IP (kind of like wake on LAN). In our museum install, we have a seperate AV system that is networked to the G5 cat servers and they have such a function for their WinXP boxes using Depicus software. I just can't seem to find something like that for OSX.
I'd rather not have the cat servers running 24/7.

I did not understand , do you want to powerup from internet or from lan ?

btw as far I know as soon it's OFF there is no way to power it up again .

If you want to wake from intenet you could try to use HamachiX.

Hamachi it's a kind of VPN ( Virtual Private Network ) that will allow you to see the museum mac's in your home network over the internet . I think then you should be able to wake up the museum's mac's from home .

If you need a good remote controller , you should think to use ARD http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/

anyway , why do you want to powerup powerdown your mac's ?
Can't you just restart it ?
did you set RESTART AFTER POWER FAILURE ? ( systemsetup -setrestartpowerfailure on )

I am looking for proper shutdown/startup over LAN. The rest of the museum systems do this, but they are all PC. I could put the macs to sleep, but I feel better about having a full restart everyday.

I feel better about having a full restart everyday.

If you want to restart your macs every day you have to set it to do that .

Go to system preferences

then Power Managament my os it's in italian , it the lamp in the center of the windows ,

then Scheduler .

see ? there you can set at what time the mac start and shut .

then CTRL+CLICK catalyst icon in the Dock , there set LUNCH AT START UP .

In cat Set SEND FULL SCREEN AT START UP .

I did not try it with catalyst , i don't know what version you are using , but some Cat release may not allow the mac to power off . If so , try to download the lasted Cat release ,

There you go ! Every day the Mac start in the morning and shut in the night .

there is software called WakeOnMAc - which sends the correct commands over the network to wake a computer from sleep:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/30394

not all computers support this, and i dont believe it can be done over wireless.

---

the energy saver control panel supports timed shut down and wake schedules in the "schedules" options.

---

there might be additional 3rd party solutions but i dont know
