these two probably wont be compatible, but both have a lot of promise for better storage on-site with you laptop.

there isnt anything wrong with using firewire for laptops.

the drive itself is the performance block. not normally the interfacing.

you are better off with a sata drive in a firewire case.
firewire is designed for hot plugging.

also.

there isnt any performance difference between sata ide and normal ide.
the drive interface technology hasnt changed performance of the drive.
