Most tiger issues fixed in public beta
video and scsi drivers now fixed by apple.

You cant turn off spotlight -

Spotlight performance

There's one slightly dim spot in the Tiger performance picture, and unfortunately it's going to be a part of every user's first experience with the new OS. When booting into Tiger for the first time, Spotlight has to index all attached drives. This is done with a low-priority background task, but there's no avoiding the huge amount of disk activity involved. Expect your first few hours in Tiger to be accompanied by the steady tick and pop of all of your hard disks.

and the scsi and video card drivers are broken.

lots of other people are seeing things broken.

its will probably take at least 2 updates to tiger to get problems fixed.

The vastness of Apple's enhancements to critical parts of the system (both the kernel dealing with network transports and the file system) are requiring a major effort to obtain compatibility.

turning off spotlight - you cant - this really was dumb.

who wants gigabytes of video files searched....

i note a post on another website:

A poster on the Apple discussion boards says that it "looks like indexing can be turned off by setting SPOTLIGHT=-NO- in /etc/hostconfig. The mdimportserver then will not launch any more at system start."

so there you go.
this would have been easier in the gui...

more things to break.

http://www.it-enquirer.com/main/ite/more/tiger_incompatibilities/

One of the reasons why software gets broken in this new version is the new Case-Sensitive HFS+ formatting. It must be related to this new disk formatting scheme as Adobe?s press preview of Creative Suite was not broken when I ran it from a pre-Case Sensitive journaled disk.

Of course, I thought about the fact that it could well be that I?m now having trouble because I was running a press preview of Creative Suite 2. Unfortunately, Acrobat 7 Professional stopped working too. It just won?t even start anymore.

Apple?s own DVD Studio Pro 3 --the latest update installed and all-- can?t seem to recognize the free space on a dual layer DVD disc anymore. Everything is fine if you burn your project to a 4.7 GB DVD, but with dual layer discs, the project has to be separately formatted to a VIDEO_TS folder and then after you have formatted the image, you can build the project and burn the dual layer without a glitch.

scsi drivers are indeed broken...

http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20050506072636260

Possible fix for some SCSI-related problems As noted over the past few days, Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) appears to have some serious issues with SCSI expansion cards and drives in some system configurations. In some cases, the presence of certain SCSI PCI cards can cause kernel panics, startup problems, and other issues.

Widgets also seem to take up tiger mindshare of the mac.

this application claims to turn them all off.

Widget Manager.

Widgets also seem to take up tiger mindshare of the mac.

so you cant turn the dashboard widgets off!

Oh my god.

even when dashboard isnt visible. its still running.

I left my poor laptop on for a while, and the memory usage grew to terrible proportions.

7.9GB of virtual memory for a handful of small apps.

The flight tracker widget is using 38.8MB real memory, and 236 MB virtual memory....

but tiger has some pretty neat stuff as well.

atto just released scsi drivers.

apple has fixed a whole bunch of bugs.

we will have to see whether 10.4.2 fixes outstanding opengl issues.

reports are slowly coming in that some of the opengl bugs are being fixed- in ati drivers.

atto has updated their scsi drivers. not tested yet.

i filed a bug with apple against no ability to disable spotlight.

10.4.2 is a lot better.

still opengl performance is down from 10.3.x

and spotlight and dashboard are terrible resource hogs.

found a hint to make dashboard go away:

http://face.centosprime.com/macosxw/?p=201

Make Dashboard go away

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

Make Dashboard come back

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO

You have to restart the Dock to have this take effect

This has not been tested by me.
