Hi Richard

Do High End have a standard licence document for the standard content provided on the Catalyst? We have a forthcoming show where the production company want details of the origin of all content used and documentation to show the copyright is released for broadcast purposes.

thanks

Nev

I have absolutely no idea what is or is not licensed for what usage by highend.

but the production company are correct to check these details - as are all end-users.
The use of copyrighted material with appropriate clearances is very important.

Image rights, and broadcast rights may or may not be available in some image libraries.

I suggest you email bobby_hale at highend.com with very very specific questions.

And if you dont get the answer you need, then dont use the library(s).

If you have any doubts at all - you might need to check the precise wording on image licenses with a lawyer who understands copyright and usage of images in the broadcast industries.

Just for you knowledge:
The content supplied from Beacon and Projected Image and Inlight C3 slots 013-014-015 in the Catalyst is given to HES for promotion of our standard and custom content we provide and are fully allowed and roaltyfree for broadcasting worldwide.
This should be for the rest of them as well, because that was the deal we made with HES about pre-loaded content for Catalyst systems.

Note that the licensing restrictions for content you purchase yourself for use, may be more restrictive.
For example the digital juice license says:

This is a non-exclusive, non-transferable license agreement between you and Digital Juice, Inc. Please read this agreement carefully before using the product. If you choose not to accept this agreement, you must return the product unused. By using any part of the Data, you are agreeing to the following terms:

1. The Data may only be used on ONE computer at any one time. For use on more than one computer at a time or for use and/or storage on a network designed for more than one user, you must acquire a special multi-user license from Digital Juice. Please call toll-free in the U.S. at 1.800.525.2203 or +1.352.369.0930 (International) for purchasing information.

You cant buy one copy of digital juice - and use it on more than one computer at any time.

In a copyright license the licensor is free to add any restrictions they want.
They grant you only a sub-set of the rights.

You have to read the small print on each and every license. IF you want to be in the clear.

And in Peppe's case - you are probably only granted a license if you bought a copy of catalyst from highend?
And possibly only for use with Catalyst?
Or can the person use the files for anything they wish?

At least Beacon DigiGobos provided on the Catalyst is free to use whatever you want (not reselling them as your own and some other point including standard issues as porn, unlegal actions and stuff like that), but free for networked systems and also renting them out as a system owner.

Broadcasting,multimedia and so on.

We don´t want to make hard rules about our content, we want people to be able to use them with no worries about licenses and so.

could a person, make changes to your content, and then resell it?
What constitutes a change like this?

One of the biggest problems facing people who make content is the lack of DRM metadata in the codecs that we use. Many people who rent Catalysts are worried about their custom content wandering when they rent out the systems. As yet, very few codecs support DRM.

Some other media server companies have used file vault as a way of protecting content, but this kills performance.

Like always, people born as collectors, act as collectors. One guy at a other company that also sells content did ask me to check if it was a possibility to make the clips working just for a limited time, I said that was options to have copy protection but I think it´s like the music and film industry, whatever you do to protect clips people will find a way to copy them or rip them.We want to sell our content of course, for a price that people hopefully don´t hesitate to buy them. We know that copy content will happen so the only way that I see it is to have the "standard" content in one folder and all your special stuff in a separate folder that you secure wipe after the job.

After I have made a job I carefully wipe out the special stuff I made from the systems if my customer wants that.

But last days in Istanbul, we did see digigobos from our series(not from the show) in a commercial for shampoo in the airport channel.........

If someone have a bright idea, that should be good, but I´m think that we have to trust people as much as we can, and accept the "collectors",they will always be there.

This is a common request.
there is no way to do this without me writing software -

would need two things - software to encrypt files, and additional gui in catalyst to enter 'keys'

quicktime or operating system has no way to supply this
