The 1013 is pretty cool and pretty cheap if you only need Y/C out. A step up from that are two units..

One is the 1012 which has controls on the front and also as Y/C and Component out.

http://www.adtecinc.com/products/edje1012/index.html

The big brother to this unit is the 1015 which is the same but also has a DVD drive.

http://www.adtecinc.com/products/edje1015/index.html

This way you can get content onto the Edje network and distribute from there. How I have been specifying this unit is the master edje has the drive (1015) and the slaves are the base model (1012)

The units slave with frame accuracy using the Adtec protocol in the Edje network.

Controlling these units via samsc can be done through serial or Ethernet.

when are you going to send me one - tim?

I used four of them slaved together once.
Worked fine, but it takes forever to upload the video files. The units have 10 instead of 100Mb ethernet and you're forced to use a dirty windows program to do the upload. Once the files were in, i started to like them.
Good skipping from file to file.

Cant you just ftp into them??

On their datasheet it says it supports ftp?

TCP/IP Ethernet protocol ? FTP Server and Client (Concurrent)

Didn't try that. I did it at the rental company that supplied them, and they just gave me the setup with the pc to upload it.
But with ftp, it would still be just the 10Mbit connection.
And i also recall having to convert the dv files specifically with their software...

Im sure you know there are lots of mac ftp programs.

RBrowser Lite was the best free one I found, and use with my websites.

Yes it would still be a 10MBit connection....very slow.

There are quite a few mac programs that will convert DV to MPEG2 files.
MPEG2 files are used as standard on DVDs.

A Program that ships with Final Cut, and DVD studio pro - 'Compressor' will create MPEG2 files in many formats.

There are also many other programs that will do this.

Version tracker search for mpeg:

I know, but the video company asked me for a dv stream file (.dv)
I offered them to bring in a .m2v or QT movie with MPEG2 compression, but the whole mac thing scared them so they only dared to do it with a .dv file.

so the client wanted delivery of a .dv file - which they then converted themselves to mpeg2 for uploading to the boxes?

Well not the client, but the rental shop that was supplying the edjes.
They were also responsible for the playback.
I delivered the video that my girlfriend made (she does motion graphics and video).
Four movies on 4 plasma's, with stuff going from screen to screen. One very wide After Effects comp, haha. 10 hrs render per movie on dual 1.8

Thanks Stefan.

Tim is doing a show with these things soon, and he wants me to add support for them - so im just checking all these things.

you were doing a widescreen playback type thing then?

4:3 with bars. I still remember the video guy wrestling with the zoom function of the plasma's...
I can try stuff out with these boxes if you want, i'm friendly with the video company and i still want to try out the serial control of them anyway.
And they want to have an inexpensive way to control them with DMX.

you can control them using ethernet. thats what i was interested in.

What kindof dmx control would your client want?

You're a programmer, i'm a hobbyist ;)
i know how to do serial with RealBasic, did some lanbox stuff.
These guys would like to have a small, cheap microcontroller box that uses one dmx channel for play/pause, one for selection, etc.

When using several machines on a large or important project always make sure one edje unit has the DVD drive (1015).. this helps with file managment..

I highly recommend the 1015 as one of the units for ease of uploading large files.. It has a DVD drive on-board..

you can upload to this thing using a mac ftp program.

samsc

you can export a dv file using the quicktime mpeg 2 component.
then multiplex the audio and video using 'MPEG Streamclip'

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24055

I just did this.
then uploaded to the adtec using the mac ftp program 'RBrowserLite'

I plan to use the on-board DVD drive since the client is giving it to me in that form..

In addition FTP transfer is much slower then using the DVD drive...

have you checked the format that the client is planning on producing his mpeg clips in?

a ten minute clip ( 300MB ) took about 10 minutes over ftp. so its not quick.
