Using Apple remote desktop to remote preview catalyst screens- works - but it completely hoses system performance...

You really really dont want to be doing this kindof thing during shows - or even when anybody is looking.

you will get about 1 layer to playback if that.

At XL when we have run into this issue, we have used; http://www.techland.co.uk/index/kvm_av400 with the long view option for remote monitoring of single output servers.

This also looks interesting for dual output servers; http://www.rose.com/htm/multivideo.htm when used in conjunction with http://www.rose.com/htm/crystalviewplus.htm

Cheers,

Phil

they were doing this on kylie.

With catalyst running - it really doesnt work well with catalyst running.
Its OK as long as Catalyst isnt running, but previewing screens, is not going to work using remote desktop.

it would be nice to have a full software preview but it proved to be too much of a performance hit in the past, and there were opengl bugs that stopped it working well enough.
so i did the best i could by outputting the current state rather than actually frames.

Hugh recommends ( hah hah ) the miranda desktop for remote monitoring of video output~:

http://www.miranda.com/?i=desktop_GC&l=1 :p

one step down from this is the Kaleido

http://www.miranda.com/?i=multi-image&l=1

and some boxes from zandar also do multi-image composites:

What about Timbuktu Pro?? should that give the same problems??
Anybody had tested that?

I am not sure whether you are talking about a preview function or a remote monitoring option.
To my mind a "preview" funtion implies that you are seing here what you will go to the output when the next cue is executed. Therefore it is a seperate output. This is how it works on vision mixers anyway.
The remote desktop option discussed here would only be a monitor option. It merely shows you what is going out already.
I have tried all sorts of VNC options and they all put strain on the processor (because the client runs in the background all the time).
The easiest and most reliable solution to avoid this is a Simple VGA DA. If you do not like to run thick expensive cables you can use VGA to CAT5/6 converter boxes. If you want keyboard and mouse control you could use USB extensions or a KVM extender. If video suffices you can use a scanconverter as well.
Since the monitor option is not a big problem if you have the cash for a few extra boxes, I am very interested in a preview function - even at Pal resolution and DVPal codec: Maybe this is possible via the composite out on the capture card (depending on model)?

Best wishes,

Sven
