Are thee fast enough to actually use for playback in catalyst? If so, how many layers do you think you could do at the same time?

these things always give around 3 layers.
whether they are fast enough to do what you need to do - you will have to try and get a demo and test it.
it is not the benchmark data rate transfer rate that is important - it is the access times and rotational latency of the drives.
these things are dependant on the drives inside the raid, not the raid itself.

We are currently testing xserve raids for speed, and getting at least 6 dv layers.

Have you tried using the one xserve RAID with multiple machines yet?

no.
Im trying to get an xsan demo asap at apple- to do this properly,
I think you need to run a fibre channel network between computers as per apple docs-
this is apple's 'video workflow' node configuration:

Peppe was very interested in this configuration as well for an upcoming show

Yeah, am doing a show with 5 servers as we speak, and am prepping for another one in a few weeks with 5 or 6, and might have the budget to purchase some disks, just trying to figure out the best route to go with.

Jason.
Do you know anything about fibrechannel switches?

jason.
whats the cost of fibre channel switches that work with xserves raids where you are?
have you looked at the approx cost of doing a raid network?
