Mac Pro Sideways

This is regarding all Mac Pro computers. IE 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Who has rack mounted your Mac Sideways? Who has tested this configuration to see if there are any issues such as overheating or failure based on changing the airflow?

I've searched dozens of forums but want to hear what results from Catalyst users have been.

Please note which Mac Pro you have done this with (year, config, etc).

Also, has anyone been bold enough to hacksaw off the handles?

I have used and mounted newer Mac PRO's sideways - the newer ones are ok - there were some earlier models with liquid cooling which had to be vertical.

With some help from a friendly flight case manufacturer - I have a design which give standard 4u with mac above, with removable top to get to the side panel of the mac. Nice and easy to work inside without pulling the mac out.

I would love to see that. I currently have my Mac Pro mounted sideways but I had to modify a case to make it fit. I have been thinking about getting a better one custom built for it.

Not tried any of the Intel MacPros on their sides...
We have an alternative 23U shock-mounted rack which holds 2 MacPros vertically - see pics:

I have seen several on their sides before... including some or the good old HES rigs. If I were to do it this way I would be certain to lay it on its MOBO side DOWN so that gravity and/or transport etc trying to remove any pci cards you may have installed etc etc... as well as minor things like large cpu sinks haha. See the attachment for how we do ours: Mac on the left, 2 23" monitors in the 2 slots to the right, 5ru for LED processors, DAs, etc, misc discs etc in small pull out, and a UPS in the bottom.

We have our MACPRO's also on the side. Had no issues with cooling and airflow.

I love your cases which is why each time I've had servers in UK I've tried to get some from you. Argh!

My issue now is making servers as compact as possible. My goal is to make them easy and cheap to air freight.

I am considering the hack saw to the handles of 4 of my machines and a 3U rack Space above in a single case.

Currently I'm using Pelican cases for the Macs and additional racks for the components but these are not tour worthy solutions.

PRG has all of their Mbox servers horizontally in a bespoke case design. The design is quite robust and doesn't seem to cause any problem with the operation of the machines.
