Catalyst doesnt load 3d models at the moment.
( but support for .obj files is in pixelmad )

jpegs, are fine. tiff files are fine.
Catalyst uses quicktime - so they files formats that quicktime loads are normally - but not always OK.

Some image files can be too big to load into catalyst.
The largest file you can load is 2048x2048.

I am redering 3d models to jpeg's. What color in the backgrounds would you recommend that look the best? Black, white, etc?

My feelings would be black - if you cant use alpha channels.

But you need to test, depends on how much black you have in your foreground object.

Catalyst also works with alpha channels in images directly.

So you can just create a tiff image with an aplha channel - where you want the area to be transparent.

jpegs, dont allow any transparency information - ( last time i checked )
TIFF files do.
Photoshop files also do - but you have to get the right layer and save settings.

I have created a tif file in photoshop - with the words 'TEST' in red on a transparent background.
If you load this into catalyst, the red letters will be transparent.

This is the original photoshop file
with unrasterized text.

You have to rasterize the text to make it usable in catalyst.
