Does anybody worked with these new graphic cards already.

It's the new graphic card for the mac pro's. It's also the only card supported by apple with two DVI connectors instead of the video cards that are sold as "standard" in the new mac's.

We want to buy some new mac pro's but not with a video card that only has one DVI connector and one mini DVI connector.

Hello Erik-Jan

I finally have one of these cards on the way from Apple for evaluation - will let you know results.

Hello Nev,

We also ordered one, I hope that we will get it this week so that we can test it also.

I will keep you informed.

Initial testing showed a decrease in performance when using a EVGA GeForce GTX 285 opposed to a stock 4870 card.

what is your testing method?

Thanks for testing Nev.

Since we still don't had a change to test the card. We ordered now our new machines with the 4870 graphic cards. Next week we will need the new machines.

I heard a lot of positive things about the 4870 card, it's only sad that they don't have 2 "normal" dvi connectors.

Kind regards,

The Nvidia 8800GT cards still work well in 2009 MacPro and it gives you back 2 x DVI ports - albeit one of this ends up being single-link.

Hello Simon,

I really like the 8800GT cards, but they are discontinued from the factory.

So that's the reason that we now go for the HD 4870.

Maybe I´m the only one, but I had really crap performance with the 8800 compared to the good old x1900. So bad I returned the card to Apple.

Many of the systems I've been in lately are HDSDI. What sucks in that I've been stuck using the crappy Gefen DVI to HDSDI Pro Scalers since that's what the company had before my arrival.

Using the x1900 I have no problems with the scalers. On the 8800s I had all kinds of issues until I wrote a custom EDID for them. The mini display port of the 4870 absolutely sucks with these scalers and I've lost connectivity intermittently.

The 8800 and 4870 will both do double TH2G boxes at 1024x768@25. The x1900 won't. Actually the 4870 handles the TH2G a little better I think.

I'm using Digital TH2G boxes and haven't yet tried the new Display port version. I'll get back to you when I do.
