Hi Guys,

If been using catalyst in a fixed installation for 3 years now and it's time to replace the Mac G5.
The point is. If read a lot of threads on the forum but i can't get my head around a couple of things.

Obvious I have to replace de G5 for a MAC pro.. Now comes the tricky part..

I made the following model in the Apple store.

2x 2,8GHz Xeon Quad
4GB ram
320GB HDD (system)
Nvidia Quadro FX5600
or is the 8800GT also a good alternative?

What i want to do is:
Capturing 4 Composite inputs (AS LFG 4 MM pci-x
Capturing 2 VGA inputs - For powerpoint or websites - Has anyone tested a good configuration for this?

Hope somebody gives me some advice.

Thnx already

Greetz,

Lennart

Hi Lennart,

4 inputs capturing, use the LFG4 card from Active Silicon
grabbing VGA inputs for powerpoint and so... use the Epiphan VGA2USB frame grabbers.. they work great with catalyst. Use the DVI2 USB myself and this works perfectly.. hardly any latency...

Hope this helps for you!

PS.. je kunt me op onderstaand nummer bellen als je meer informatie wilt...

Nvidia 8800GT is sufficient for most applications. If you need multiple outputs, consider using the matrox TH2G or DH2G connected to the outputs of the 8800GT. They are better value for money than the Quadro FX5600 - BUT it depends what (resolutions) you're trying to achieve... Matrox units are not always suitable for every application.

Also consider a SSD for content playback: Intel / OCZ / MTRON

I have a machine with a Quatro FX5600 and it's not worth the price for Catalyst. It's a great card but I have it because I use it for rendering with other applications.

If you pick the basic Apple configuration and add the 8800 then you'll be fine.
Just add the SSD, LFG4, and one of the Epiphan capture devices.

Resolutions are gona be 2x HD 1920x1080 from a D/TH2G on one output and on the other output just all the layers.. That's to be the configuration screen at a resolution of 1280x1024.
So the Highest resolution is gonna be 3840x1080.

I have a windows pc with 2 Nvidia 9800GTX+ cards in them.. Are those cards also usable for mac now that macs have intel processors and PCI-X16 slots?
Hope anybody has some experience with them.

The nVidia 9800 engine is the same one being used on the new Macbook and Macbook Pro Portables. However, they are configured completely differently and the cards you have would not work in a Mac Pro.

So there are only Windows configured 9800 cards.. That sucks:(
That's probably also with the newer cars from the GT200 series is it not?

Nvidia 8800 GT (mac version) is really your only choice. Don't buy a PC card - it wont work. You need the Mac version.

Ive just tested a DH2G-Digital connected to an 8800 and managed to get 3 x 1920x1200. 1920x1200@60Hz from output 1 and 3840x1200 @57Hz from the DH2G-D (see screen shot attached). 1920x1080 doesnt seem possible via DH2G-D

If you dont need the 'programming' screen - then you could use the 2 outputs directly from the graphics card and ignore the DH2G

what about the ATI RADEON 3870?
