Only in m147 and later-

Using the 'Apple intermediate codec' in m147 its possible to get 4x HD 1080p layers on a Quad Intel 2.66Ghz with MTRON 32GB SATA internal SSD.
Not tested on any G5s.
The performance of the apple intermediate codec is the best i have tested so far-

8 layers @ 1024x768 25fps
8 layers @ 1280x720 25fps
4 layers @ 1920x1080 25fps
4 layers @ 2048x1080 25fps
2 layers @ 3072 x 768 25fps
1 layer @ 4096x2048 30fps ( maximum movie size supported in Catalyst m147 ) - Super HD

Apple intermediate codec is almost twice as fast as photojpeg 50-75%
Comparable image quality to photojpeg.

In compressor - you must use the 'Preset other' in the compressor video settings - shown below
And set the pixel aspect ratio to square -to prevent wierd scaling

Comments and tests on other systems needed

Another question.. We was dealing on a XServe RAID, what is best for HD playback, ot have it on our rental systems,.. a XServe RAID or a MTRON disks internally on the MacPros. 2 in RAID ? Solo ? Please send us your opinion. Regards

this depends on what you want-
a single mtron works very well with most normal uses-

mtron doesnt have any performance degradation ever- works the same whether disc is full or empty. no latency. limited capacity - you arent going to get your entire digital juice library on one.
but me personally- im not going to do my own shows without one - because they work so much better than any scsi or sata discs. Completely constant performance -

XServe raids are HUGE and a pain to administer.

looks like the 3.0Ghz 8 core machine can do about 6 layers of 1080p @ 25fps using the Apple intermediate codec.

looks like the 3.0Ghz 8 core machine can do about 6 layers of 1080p @ 25fps using the Apple intermediate codec.

m147 -Preliminary tests on 8Core Mac Pro3.0Ghz with MTRON 32GB SSD Internal 3.5Inch. x1900 4GB ram.

Apple intermediate codec

512x512 14 layers @ 25fps
640x480 14 layers @ 25fps
720x486 14 layers @ 25fps
720x576 14 Layers @ 25fps
768x576 14 layers @ 25fps
800x600 14 layers @ 25fps
1024x768 10 layers @ 25fps
1280x720 9 layers @ 25fps
1440x1080 8 layers @ 25fps
1920x1080 7 layers @ 25fps
2048x1080 7 layers @ 25fps
3072x768 5 layers @ 25fps
4096x2048 1 layer @ 25fps

The avantage of MTRON over rotating discs - is that there are no dropped frames.
And this performance is consistent over every file - regardless of capacity or size of file or disc free space
